Before the actual slitting process, the metal strip usually passes through a straightening and leveling unit. Metal coils may develop curvature, waviness, or unevenness during the manufacturing, transportation, or storage phases. The straightening and leveling unit utilizes a series of precisely arranged rollers to flatten and align the strip, ensuring that it enters the slitting section in an optimal state. Proper straightening is essential because any irregularities in the strip can lead to inconsistent cut widths, burrs, or other quality issues in the final slit strips.
The slitting mechanism is the heart of the metal coil slitter. It typically consists of multiple circular blades or rotary knives mounted on parallel shafts. These blades are made from high quality materials, such as hardened steel or carbide, which are selected for their excellent wear resistance and cutting performance. The number of blades and the spacing between them can be adjusted according to the desired width of the final strips. As the metal strip is slit into individual narrower strips, a recoiler comes into play. The recoiler winds each of these slit strips into separate coils. Similar to the uncoiler, recoilers can be manual or automated, with automated recoilers being preferred for high volume production. Automated recoilers are equipped with tension control systems that monitor and adjust the tension during the winding process. Maintaining the correct tension is crucial to prevent the coils from becoming loose, distorted, or damaged, ensuring that the slit strips are neatly wound and ready for use in subsequent manufacturing steps.
